What happens when music and film are made in tandem, rather than one in response to the other? In Kavé’s “Through Waves”, we get a glimpse of this innovative approach to art making, where visual and musical effects flow together in seamless intertwinement. Set on the imaginary “Perpetua”, a failed human colony on a distant planet, Kave uses this track to invite us to explore an alternate universe that is far from the technology-saturated one we inhabit on earth.

The musical film experience begins with a car traveling alone on a vast highway along a seashore, with everything tinged with deep red hues. We instantly gain a feeling of solitude on this distant planet, where things feel dystopian but also peaceful (perhaps an indicator of the artist’s vision of a post-human-dominated world). A sense of wholeness permeates the entire experience even as the characters in the film travel completely alone. Though there is a feeling of desolation on this far away planet covered in red, there is also a deep sense of fulfillment in the solitude of life away from earthly civilization. Kavé has managed to package these contrasting sentiments into a holistic work from the very opening scenes.

From a strictly musical perspective, the sound is warm and pristinely mixed, providing us with layers of ear candy through various tremolo and echo effects. Not long into the track, staccato guitar riffs arrive on the scene, adding sharpness to the otherwise airy vibe of the song. A fairly thick and thumping rhythm section provides the backbone of it all and adds some movement to the otherwise watery soundscape.

Overall, we appreciate Kavé’s ability to create interest in this track through compelling juxtapositions: a sense of dystopian darkness combined with contentment and tranquility, an aura of being alone yet feeling totally complete, and a sound that is both atmospheric and punchy. “Through Waves” is not your typical listening experience, and it is only fully felt when viewed as a short film, not just a piece of music. Through interesting contrasts and the melding of music and film, Kavé has accomplished something truly unique here.
