There’s music that feels like it’s trying to be something, and then there’s King Booty Disco. A collection of artists from the Dallas-Fort Worth area, King Booty sticks to what they know how to do best in their debut album “Disco Crush”: leaning into swanky dance ballads that you’d expect from a band with “disco” in its name. From the fine-tuned guitar solos to the right combinations of horns to the multi-layered harmonies, King Booty Disco feels like they’ve really landed on their musical bullseye in this 8-track debut LP. 

There’s no grand intro or lead-up to the fun in “Disco Crush”. The album begins with its signature sound from the very first notes in the opener “Vinyl Love”. A mid-tempo track with a catchy piano progression leading the way, “Vinyl Love” really sets the tone for the rest of the LP with the vocalists repeating “come a little closer to me” – a fitting line for an album that feels at its core like an invitation to be free and dance. After they’ve established that as the mood, the band follows the opener with two more mid-tempo tracks that slowly begin to unveil their immaculate talents in full force. It all culminates in track 4, “SOS”, which feels like the true hit for us. Originally released as a single in 2023, “SOS” feels like a typical King Booty track on steroids. As usual, it begins with a catchy keyboard progression before other layers like strings and guitar riffs build on top. Eventually, in the chorus we get a killer melody, a perfect blend of harmonies, and strings that hit the spot. The final minute and half break out into impeccable solos. There’s just a little extra energy, a little extra spice on this one, and if you’ve only got time to listen to one track, this is the one we most recommend. Of course, a much better choice would be to listen to the full album cover to cover.

The back half of the album features more exciting touches you won’t want to miss – stand-out vocals in “Magic”, a pleasant change of tempo and an inflection of Spanish in “I Can’t Dance With You”, and an ear-popping round of instrumental solos in “Reckless”. Overall, King Booty’s “Disco Crush” feels like the kind of simple, unfiltered fun we could all use in our listening routines. A cohesive set of infectious dance ballads, “Disco Crush” showcases the band at their finest, never straying far from what they do best.
