RECALIBRATED, Amana Melome’

“RECALIBRATED The Remixes” sees established Euro-Caribbean-American singer-songwriter Amana Melome’ taking her colorful artistry to new heights. A true melting pot of musical genres, performance styles, and moods, “Recalibrated” takes on a distinctly fusion aesthetic but remains cohesive as the work of one artist rooted in her own deeply felt experiences.

When compared to the original versions of these songs, the tracks on The Remixes album are noticeably more vivacious and upbeat. However, while some artists embark on a remix album to completely flip their songs around, Melome’ doesn’t go quite that far here. She elevates and adds some spice rather than redoing the recipe entirely. Take track 2, “SO DONE”, for example. What was previously a danceable tune with plenty of pizzazz in its original form has morphed into something a bit more intense but entirely recognizable here in The Remixes. (An exception to this rule might be “Recalibration”, which takes on a slightly more dramatic transformation in each of its versions in The Remixes).

Looking back on Melome’s catalogue, there is considerably more electronic experimentation in “RECALIBRATED”, which feels like a natural evolution for a songwriter whose career has spanned two decades. The important part is that she maintains her distinctly rich sound and musical flow rooted in a blend of heritages. The chord progressions, the vocal performance and the textures still feel authentically Melome’ – a blend of funky, jazzy, worldly tones that create something truly unreplicable. She’s still a “Space Age Mama”, and it would be foolish to try to describe her in ordinary terms.
