Unpredictable feels like the right word to describe the essence of the genre-evading track “Evaporate” by Bernice Marsala. Unbound by formulaic song structures and conventional instrumentations, Marsala creates something that truly keeps us on our toes.
Setting the scene with a description of a character who is hiding their pain, Marsala shrouds her impassioned vocals in interesting bell sounds and other percussive textures. We’re not quite sure where it’s going at this point in the composition – a slow melancholy tale of a character with a hopeless fate or a build into something more intense? In the second verse, she answers by introducing a heavier, deep bass, electronic style of drums that take us on a slowly unfolding epic journey. Muted synths and bell sounds continue to provide a lush and unexpected background. Each sound is a surprising and exciting pop of color that we really couldn’t have expected to be there.
As we get deeper into the track and eventually reach the last chorus, Marsala goes full force with distorted guitars and energetic drums that introduce us to a heavier dimension to her sound, almost Linkin Park-inspired. She doesn’t linger for long in the heavy section because that would be, well, too predictable. Instead she unwinds into an atmospheric outro where the bells once again take center stage.
In sum, Marsala’s “Evaporate” is full of twists and turns that make for an exciting journey. Strap yourselves in for this joyride of genre fluidity and you’ll be pleasantly surprised by just how far one song can take you.
