Undercover Bitch, Hallaballoo

Some of the most legendary tv, movie, and novel characters are not the most straightforward. When asked to describe why we love them so much, we might have to do some thinking about what subtle behaviors and mannerisms make them as compelling as they are. Is it perhaps true that great character development often relies on subtlety and complexity, on showing rather than telling? Minneapolis rockers Hallaballoo follow in this tradition in their single “Undercover Bitch”, a character study of a woman whose lust for blood is revealed through descriptive detail and tonal craftsmanship over the course of the song.

Starting us off with a progression of Nirvana-esque power chords, Hallaballoo begin to paint a picture of their main character right from the beginning. We learn early on that the “undercover bitch” has a shady way of making ends meet as the band oscillates between stripped down verses and full throttled, high energy choruses in the opening minutes. In a way, the constant pendulum swing between the muted verses and the hard-hitting choruses starts to feel emblematic of the lifestyle we soon learn the character leads: one where she quietly goes about a seemingly normal life all while finding moments to bump people off out of nowhere.

In addition to shrewdly developing the story of the main character, the band do a clever job of utilizing song structure and instrumentation to cultivate a foreboding vibe over the course of the four minutes of the composition. We as the listeners can never get too comfortable as the mood changes constantly between the tempered, bass-centric verses and the explosive, anthemic rock refrain. All the while, the lead vocalist’s seductive tone feels like a lure, but we feel underneath it all that something dangerous is lurking. These tension building tactics are pulled off with ease, perhaps emblematic of the songwriting prowess of these seasoned songwriters of over two and a half decades.

With pristine production and precisely toned guitar effects, Hallaballoo present themselves as not only capable of stadium rock energy but also meticulous musical mastery in their single “Undercover Bitch”. Add in the lyrics and the deftly developed story of the perplexing main character, and you get a song that is worthy of high praise.
