Becky Raisman’s Earth Goddesses EP is a beacon of positivity and hope in an otherwise dark moment on planet earth. Featuring proud feminist themes and honest lyrics, the EP is an expression of the artist’s defiant convictions packaged in catchy, upbeat indie pop and rock. Drawing on some of our favorite classic influences, Raisman makes an impression with her ear-pleasing palette of sounds.

What’s most intriguing in the Earth Goddesses EP is Raisman’s ability to convey common themes of positivity and self-actualization through three completely different genres. She kicks things off with Moonlight Goddesses, a track with a distinctly bedroom pop tone communicated through thick tape effects on the drums and shoegazey vibe in the guitars. Despite the brooding tones and melodies, Raisman manages to keep things bright in the lyrics: “Daughters, mothers, aunts, and nieces are dancing in the night”, as she describes a scene of “gathering in peace and harmony…breaking chains of ignorance”. This same sense of powerful positivity is found in track 2, “Live It Up, Live It Up Loud”, albeit in a much more upbeat, major-key way. Here, crisp and clean guitar progressions are interspersed among a tight, punchy beat in a manner reminiscent of Sublime. “Gonna live it up, gonna live it loud, a lack of confidence is nowhere to be found” is the central lyric of the song, hammering home the righteous exuberance of the EP. And finally, track 3 “Shining Through My Window” is more of a piano-driven ballad with big 80s anthem rock energy. Uplifting themes of light, love, and renewal pervade the lyrics, mirroring the themes alluded to in the earlier tracks.

In sum, Becky Raisman’s Earth Goddesses EP contains a strong injection of positivity packaged in three different musical styles. Despite the differences in the musical disposition of each track, Raisman develops a cohesive theme in the lyrics that acts as the EP’s prevailing thesis of positivity and defiance. In a moment of chaos, war, and never-ending conflict in the world, works like Raisman’s Earth Goddesses EP are as needed as ever.
