Melding big rumbling drums, free strumming guitars, and classic rock style vocals in their latest single “Everytime”, Riffindots takes us deep into a world replete with imagination and color. A zany splash of rock and roll amidst a crowded landscape of like-minded indie music, “Everytime” is marked most by its sense of authenticity. Nothing feels pre-meditated, manufactured or over-produced here; it’s just a singer-songwriter, her collection of riffs and sounds, and her emotions on full display in “Everytime”.
The song starts off with a bang, with high register vocals and big open guitar chords immediately immersing us in the colorful rock cosmos. A melodic screaming in the background conveys the sense that there are some things the artist just needs to get off the chest right from the get go. “Every time I feel defeated I just have to sing in the hallway”, they shout. One need not go out on too much of a limb to wonder if this very track, which feels like a much-needed tension release, was born in such a fashion. Adding to the actual content of the lyrics is the sense of urgency and fearlessness with which they are delivered. In “Everytime”, the release of tension is palpable as we experience the singer’s seemingly bottled up emotions finally finding a place to land.
Two verse-chorus cycles in, Riffindots switches to a lower register vocal, but the edgy energy keeps on going. With lines like “there’s no one alive who’s in pictures like that” and “there’s no one alive who’s never laughed at”, the artist hints at what forces may be driving the frustration without explicitly laying it out for us. The rough and raw character is reminiscent of early female rock and roll giants (think a little Joplin, a little Stevie Nicks, and a little Joan Jett to name a few), and true to the legacy of those muses, Riffindots bucks convention and polish while also adding a touch of quirkiness for good measure.
If you’re looking for something raw, colorful, and even a bit poetic to add to your listening rotation, Riffindots is a great place to start. Authenticity carries the day in “Everytime”, as distorted guitars, thick bass tones, and fiery vocals present an iteration of classic rock that isn’t afraid to be itself. Spin it alongside the Jetts and Joplins of your catalogue, and you’ll be surprised to find that Riffindots fits right in with these early raconteurs of rock.
